About the Event

Course Overview

This course provides local-and state- level emergency responders with a robust understanding of the duties, responsibilities, and capabilities of an effective Planning Section Chief (PSC) on an All-Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT). These responsibilities fall into two categories:

1) Managing the planning cycle

2) Tracking resources and incident status

This course is an instructor-led training that supports learning through discussion, lecture, and active participation in multiple exercises that provides a realistic, scenario-driven approach to mastering the skills required of a PSC. Exercises, simulations, discussions, and a final exam enable participants to process and apply their new knowledge.


Note: This course meets the requirements for cascading response personnel under California’s spill management team (SMT) regulations (14 CCR § 830.1–830.11).


Overall Course Objective:

Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate, through activities and a Final Exam, the duties, responsibilities, and capabilities of an effective Planning Section Chief.

Target Audience

NIMS ICS All-Hazards training should be completed by personnel who are regularly assigned to Functional, Support, or Unit Leader positions on Type 3 or 4 AHIMTs, or by those persons who desire to seek credentials/certification in those positions.

Four days (25 hours)

To comply with FEMA certification requirements, registrants must provide the following prior to the start of training:

Registrants who do not submit these documents before the first day of class may still be permitted to participate in the training; however, they will not be guaranteed a FEMA certificate upon completion of the course.
